Unreal Engine is the force behind massively popular games like BioShock, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3, Red Steel, Mirror’s Edge, Deus Ex, Borderlands and several Harry Potter franchise games. It was introduced with the 1998 PC game Unreal and since then the Unreal Engine is being used for dozens and dozens of popular games on virtually every major gaming platform from Xbox to Wii and PlayStation 3.
The popular iPhone game Angry Birds, which was recently made available on Android, is also powered by the Unreal Engine. Now there’s some good news for iOS gaming enthusiasts from the company Epic Games who announced at the Korean Games Conference that the developer kit for its popular Unreal graphics engine will soon “generate iOS applications.” In other words, one of the most popular and advanced 3D engines used by console and PC video games will soon be used to produce graphically impressive iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad games.
Epic Games representatives were present at the recent Apple iPod event and demonstrated a new iPhone and iPod game called Epic Citadel which runs on the Unreal Engine. The demo was made available as a free download from the App Store and has since seen a million downloads from gamers worldwide.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs said at the event that the iPhone and iPod Touch are fast becoming the biggest and best portable gaming devices, beating the likes of Sony and Nintendo and this might not be an exaggerated claim. If only a demo can get a million downloads, it’s easy to imagine the success of all that is coming up through Apple’s new Xbox Live like social gaming platform called Game Centre.
