Tablets Will Outsell Netbooks By 2012, Says Forrester Research

by Ferman Aziz

A report released today by Forrester Research claims that tablet computing is expected to increase massively in the very near future and the data collected indicates that tablet sales in the US will overtake Netbook sales by 2012 and Desktop sales by 2015. The report was presented by Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman at the Untethered conference today in New York City. The report expects 3.5 million tablets (including the iPad and other tablets) to be sold this year, growing to 20.4 million in 2015. Desktop sales, on the other hand, are expected to drop from 18.7 million units in 2010 to 15.7 million units in 2015. Only laptops will sell more in the US with a 42 percent market share.

Early signs of this trend are evident in the massive popularity of the iPad which sold a record 2 million devices in about 8 weeks. Apple is not the only company cashing in on the tablet popularity as there is a barrage of these sleek gadgets available in the market from a number of manufacturers world wide.
