‘Google Me’ The New Facebook Competitor?

by Ferman Aziz

Talking about social media must be a sore, if not taboo, topic over at the Google headquarters. The world leaders in a number of online services have still to create a decent presence in the field which is fast becoming internet users’ biggest playground. Social media has changed the way we communicate, promote, earn and get entertained to an un recognisable level and it must be frustrating for Google to not be part of the most lucrative and rapidly increasing market in its usual way.

After Google Buzz failed to create any thing closer to its name in the online world and Google owned Orkut already dead, Google is said to be coming up with a social media project rumoured to be called Google Me. The news comes from a reliable source as Kevin Rose from Digg claimed in a tweet on Sunday. Kevin said

Ok, umm, huge rumour: Google to launch facebook competitor very soon “Google Me”, very credible source.

Now former Facebook executive and Quora founder Adam D’Angelo has taken things a little further by declaring on Quora that

This is not a rumour. This is a real project. There are a large number of people working on it. I am completely confident about this.

Challenging Facebook is no mean feat to begin with and actually achieving it is another story altogether but then we didn’t know we’ll all start Twittering a couple of years ago while we frantically updated our Facebook statuses. So Google can certainly hope for the best.
